SAY NO TO BUFFER ZONES

…Abortion clinics want to stop pro-life pavement-counsellors saving babies’ lives. They are trying to stop them standing outside their buildings and offering women help to avoid an abortion.

Every week a few women turn around at the very last moment and decide not to go ahead with an abortion. Pavementcounsellors are there to help them by offering support – emotional and practical – so they can make a better choice. Usually, a pavement-counsellor is supported by a small group of people praying nearby. But abortion clinics want to make it illegal for anyone to stand near their premises to pray or offer women help to avoid abortion Abortion clinics are losing money

When a woman decides against an abortion, the abortion clinic misses out on its fee. Now, prolife groups have come together to resist calls for “buffer-zones” which would make it illegal for pro-life pavement-counsellors to offer women help near a clinic. Typically, abortion clinic get £600 for each abortion they carry out. SPUC estimate that the abortion industry could be losing £100,000 or more a year because mothers decide to give birth instead of aborting their babies.

Buffer zones to block help for women

The major abortion chain BPAS (British Pregnancy Advisory Service) is calling for “Buffer Zones” around abortion clinics. Their efforts have attracted some parliamentary support, with several high-proCile MPs backing the campaign to protect abortion clinics' income and stop women having access to pro-life help.

Buffer zones work by making it illegal to offer help to a woman or girl entering the building for an abortion.

Several places including three US states, one Canadian province and one state in Australia (Tasmania) have “buffer zones” around abortion centres varying from 10m to 150m.

The penalties for contravening buffer zones can be severe and disproportionate.

In South Africa, which has a draconian pro- abortion law, pavement counsellors could face a ten year prison sentence if accused of obstructing access to an abortion clinic. And these foreign models could be imported to British shores if the UK abortion lobby gets its way.Pro-life groups back ‘Say NO to Buffer Zones’ campaign

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) does not organise prayer vigils and pavement-counselling at clinics – it works in many other areas of pro-life activity. Pro-life organisations like the Good Counsel Network, the Helpers of God's Precious Infants and 40 Days for Life organise this front-line pro- life witness. A number of smaller regional groups are also involved in pavement-counselling and the back-up that pavement-counsellors need so that women who 'turn-around' can be given help. Many lives have been saved. Personal video testimony refutes false ‘harassment’ claims

The call for buffer zones is linked to allegations about harassment and intimidation by pro-life counsellors. But Robert Colquhoun, head of 40 Days for Life (40 DfL), says that their pavementcounsellors are considerate and compassionate. No allegations of harassment or intimidation have ever been substantiated against any pavement-counsellors in Britain. Mrs Clare McCullough of the London-based Good Counsel Network (GCN), states that her

SPUC has produced a 4-minute video, giving the testimony of a young woman who went to have an abortion. In the video, she explains that she was under great pressure, but spoke to a pavement counsellor from the Good Counsel Network who helped her avoid an abortion. “The potential introduction of buffer-zones is a really bad idea” she says. “Not every woman that walks into those clinics actually wants to go through with a termination.”

GCN and 40 DfL in Britain are among the pro-life groups supporting SPUC’s new petition. The petition asks the Home Secretary and MPs to resist the calls for buffer-zones. Don’t let the abortion lobby ‘kill off kindness’

John Smeaton of SPUC said: “We have launched this petition in solidarity with other pro-life groups, and we hope that everyone who recognises that abortion is a disaster for both mother and baby will sign it. “After backing the pro-life Glasgow midwives in their Supreme Court battle our funds have been severely depleted. But we are committed to help defend our fellow pro-life groups now under attack in Parliament. Their heroic witness must not be outlawed, and we hope pro-life supporters from around the country can Cind it in their hearts to help us raise the £25,000 we desperately need to Cight this battle over the next few months,” concluded Mr Smeaton.
