Gili’s is a different kind of book and still has its place. We are more than glad to bring it back, with the benefit of the added Spanish text of the duende lecture, a number of corrections suggested by Christopher Maurer (see the Note on the Text, p. 188) as well as a handful of alterations to his translations which Gili had made. Among them perhaps most notable is the repeated line in ‘Somnambular Ballad’, over the translation of which much argument has taken place – almost every time, in fact, that the poem is discussed: ‘Verde que te quiero verde.’ In the old edition this read: ‘Green, green, I love you green.’ It is now the plainer and more forceful ‘Green, I want you green.’
