The photo above shows the same view after the site had been excavated. The same lump of masonry can be seen now surrounded by scaffolding ready for consolidation; but a massive central tower has emerged from under the turf in the background.

Right. The main entrance to the castle was not very impressive, running from centre right to bottom left. On the right, part of the scarp of the moat can be seen. The building in the centre is the guardroom.
