Acknowledgements Judy Groves and John Maher are indebted to Noam Chomsky for his patience and courtesy on the occasion of our visit to MIT, and for his encouragement and extensive comments on the final draft of the text Any mistakes or Infelicities remain the responsibility of the author and artist John Maher thanks colleagues for their encouragement or advice during the writing of this book, in particular Ron Asher, George Bedell, Roger Buckley, Alan Davies, Bates Hoffer, Shaun Malarney, Aya Nishizono-Maher and Suzanne Quay. My thanks go to Richard Appignanesi for his intelligent work on the manuscript and for his encouraging faxes which kept my engine firing; to Peter Pugh for calmly keeping the faith in the project and the sake warm, on a Tokyo winter's night; to Duncan Heath for his cool professionalism in the face of critical deadlines and summer heat; to the unemployed man on a bus from Harvard Square to MIT for his erudition on poverty and wealth in Boston and his encouragement to do this book with his words: "When I first heard Chomsky speak, I just wanted to run out into the street and shout: 'Hey listen, listen! Somebody's telling the truth!'" Judy Groves thanks Oscar Zarate for the illustrations on pages 12, 72, 73, 84, 102, 116, 129, 138 and 164; Colin Smith for technical assistance; and David King for his help with picture research. About the authors John Maher studied philosophy and linguistics in London, Michigan and Edinburgh. He has published ten books on: bilingualism, Ainu, language rights, and the languages of Japan. He lives and works in Tokyo where he is Professor of Linguistics at International Christian University. John dedicates this book to his daughter Sophie, to whom he offers Chomsky's comment: "If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things. There's a chance you may contribute to making a better world." Judy Groves is an artist, illustrator and designer. She has also illustrated introductory guides to Jesus, Lacan, Wittgenstein, Levi-Strauss and Philosophy. Handlettering by Woodrow Phoenix Typesetting by Wayzgoose 175
