Casting off the shackles

Such forces may be positive or negative, active or reactive, creative or (self-) destructive. No matter, Deleuze says: desire does not reason why, or ask beforehand whether an experience of alterity will result in something positive, or not, for that is to fall back into metaphysics.

What is important, philosophically and politically, is that humanity resists the tendency to ascribe MEANiNG or, indeed, ANY VALUATiON AND

identity to life.

And so, the significance of the Continental philosophical tradition as it reaches from Kant and Nietzsche to Deleuze lies in its endeavour to overcome the shackles of representation that ensnare humanity and life – whatever the stakes involved and the outcome this may have.
