THOMAS VOIGT Jonas Kaufmann The Authorised Biography
The authorised biography of one of the greatest classical tenors in the world today, the German tenor Jonas Kaufmann.
Jonas Kaufmann is best known for performing in spinto roles such as Don José in Carmen and the title role in Don Carlos. He has also sung leading tenor roles in the operas of Richard Wagner with success in Germany and abroad. In 2014, the New York Times described Kaufmann as ‘a box-office draw, and . . . the most important, versatile tenor of his generation’. In February 2017 he visited the Barbican for a sold-out eleven-day residency and he is scheduled to return to the Royal Opera House in Otello this summer.
In this illuminating biography we hear from his remarkable teachers and gain insights into Kaufmann’s thoughts and emotions before and during performances at opera houses around the world.
Thomas Voigt was formerly an editor of the classical music magazines Opernwelt (Opera World) and Fono Forum. His previous books include biographies of the German opera singers Martha Mödl and Inge Borkh.
