notes & acknowledgements These poems were selected from my four collections, together with a section of ‘New Poems’ from a fifth. To these I added two translations that first appeared in my anthology 20thCentury French Poems (Faber, 2002), ‘In the Sun’ and ‘I Have Dreamed of You So Long’. For some of the historical detail in the Polish poems (‘Tablet of the Law’ through ‘A Letter from America’) I am indebted to The Chronicle of the Łódź Ghetto, ed.
