notes & acknowledgements
These poems were selected from my four collections, together with a section of ‘New Poems’ from a fifth. To these I added two translations that first appeared in my anthology 20thCentury French Poems (Faber, 2002), ‘In the Sun’ and ‘I Have Dreamed of You So Long’.
For some of the historical detail in the Polish poems (‘Tablet of the Law’ through ‘A Letter from America’) I am indebted to The Chronicle of the Łódź Ghetto, ed. Lucian Dobroszycki (Yale, 1984) and Łódź Ghetto, ed. Alan Adelson and Robert Lapides (Viking, 1989).
Grateful acknowledgement is made to the editors of the following journals in which some of the new poems first appeared: PN Review, Poem, Spectator, Times Literary Supplement.
‘Collects for Lent’ appeared in a pamphlet, Over the Frost (San Romano, 2016). Five sections of the poem were set to voice, flute and harp by Jeremy Thurlow, first performed at the Prieuré de Lavaray, May 2015. ‘Apples’ was first published in the 5 Poem pamphlet series, No. 12 (Clutag Press, 2016).
