T he T ortoise and the H are An exhibition of works by William Roberts and J acob Kramer
7 J uly - 7 September 2003
The Ben Uri Gallery, The London Jewish Museum of Art, in conjunction with Leeds University Art Gallery, is delighted to announce the third exhibition in the series The Whitechapel Boys that focuses on the Jewish ardsts who were part o f the early twentieth-century cultural outpouring emerging from London’s East End.
The exhibition chronicles the two artists’ visual development and divergence, encompassing classically-inspired works from the Slade period through to their unique and individual responses to abstraction during the 1910s and 1920s. It examines their abiding interest in ‘family’ as subject-matter, as well as portraiture in a wider context; Kramer’s search for the spiritual in his art, versus Roberts’ dedication to recording daily life in London, and the influence ot the First World War.
