Mella Shaw is an artist using clay to make thought-provoking objects and site-specific installations. Underpinned by a background in anthropology, museums and the study of material culture, Shaw’s practice centres on reoccurring themes of balance, tipping points, thresholds and edges. While sometimes purely formal and at other times figurative, her strong but delicate work explores and confronts weighty themes of fragility and loss. Her installation HARVEST focuses on the environmental tipping point of plastic pollution in the oceans and seas. Shaw has an energetic desire for exploration and uses a wide range of ceramic techniques in her work, both traditional and digital. For her, the individual idea determines her method of approach: always thinking through making.
