The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most iconic sources of English history, yet comparatively few people living here are likely to have seen it in the esh. That looks set to change following the announcement that the tapestry will be heading to the UK in 2022. Such a move would be tting in more ways than one – for, in all likelihood, the tapestry was created in England, under Norman direction. And, despite it being a chronicle of Norman victory, it portrays the vanquished Anglo-Saxons in a surprisingly positive light. In our cover feature on page 60, Bayeux Tapestry expert Michael Lewis explores these fascinating aspects of the embroidery’s story. Meanwhile, Michael Wood has used this month’s column (page 17) to share his thoughts on the remarkable news.
Another upcoming treat for Britain’s history fans is BBC Two’s Civilisations, which reimagines the landmark Kenneth Clark series for the 21st century and is due to air this month. It features a formidable presenting trio of Simon Schama, Mary Beard and David Olusoga, and I’ve been lucky enough to speak to all three of them in advance of the series. Find out what they had to say on page 34.
As I’m sure you’re aware, the magazine now extends into various digital spheres, including our History Extra website, podcast and social media platforms. The website has just been redesigned and relaunched, so do be sure to check it out, at historyextra.com, and please let us know what you think.

Helen Castor The attempt to piece together a psychological portrait of Elizabeth I is a fascinating challenge. Did she, like Alice in Wonderland, either mean what she said, or say what she meant? P Helen tries to decipher what Elizabeth I was really thinking on page 29
Alexander Watson I nd the German Spring O ensive of 1918 fascinating because of the sheer drama. This was Germany’s slim, but real, last chance to win total victory in the First World War. P Alexander tells the story of Germany’s desperate final bid to win the war in 1918 on page 20
Wendy Webster What struck me is that there were new arrivals across all four nations of the United Kingdom. Even many of the islands of the British Isles became increasingly diverse. P Wendy discusses her new book on diversity in Britain during the Second World War on page 69
