KJolly steps down
EVIN Jolly is stepping down after – in many ways – a record breaking season for Mildenhall because he admits he “ran out of steam”.
“As I said in the statement we put out,” he commented, “the decision has nothing to do with the fact that, in the end, we didn’t get the trophies we deserved.
“Injuries at the wrong time prevented us winning the silverware, but it has been an amazing season of success.
“Martin Dugard called us the team of the year and I’m fairly sure the rest of the National League sees it like that.
“In so many ways, we achieved what we planned and set out to do. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with so many great people in all aspects of the club. It all came together perfectly this year.
“So why stand down now? Because I and my wife Gill can’t keep on devoting so much time and effort to the speedway any more.
“Running even a National League club is a big, time-consuming job. But we have four grandchildren who are all involved in sport – football, hockey and cycle speedway – and amongst other things that we want to do we want to devote more time to them.
“I’m 60 years old and I also still do a full-time building maintenance job with the council. Eight years with the Fen Tigers,

Admission is free for the event, which is organised by the Save Coventry Speedway & Stock Car Campaign Group, and will provide a full update on events of the last year.
Developers Brandon Estates have recently submitted additional information to Rugby Council in a bid to support their planning application, including a ‘needs assessment’ which seeks to convince planning officials that the need for the sports in the Coventry area is redundant as they are perfectly well catered for elsewhere in the Midlands.
Naturally the Campaign Group extensively disputes these remarks, and their response will be amongst the items discussed at next week’s meeting.
The event takes place in the Woodlands Suite, and confirmed attendees include Rugby MP Mark Pawsey and Leader of Rugby Council Michael Stokes.

“Despite that though, I’ve enjoyed just about all my time with the club. I’m passionate about speedway.
“I don’t think it’s ever really been run properly nationally but it’s a great sport, which I desperately hope doesn’t kill itself off.
“We’ve had a marvellous season at West Row. There’s been so much exciting racing from these brilliant young riders.
“Attendances have been very healthy, and we had our biggest crowd of the season for the playoff final even though it was – ridiculously – on a Thursday night in late October.
“It was such a shame that our fantastic supporters couldn’t have seen the full team we put together racing against Eastbourne for the trophies.
“Injuries, especially these days, play such a big part in deciding who wins what in the sport. It didn’t used to be so bad.
“We beat Eastbourne on aggregate in the NL Trophy (98-81) and I’m confident we could have done it again, with Danny (Ayres) and Jordan (Jenkins) in the line-up.

wise, so good luck to them. They are a strong side with some excellent youngsters like ours.
“But take the equivalent riders to Danny and Jordan out of their team, say Mark Baseby and Jason Edwards, and put them up against a full strength Mildenhall, and we all know who would have ended up with the cups.
“After starting out as a rider with the Tigers all those years ago, it was great to be able to return, bring it back into the sport, and see it being successful again.
“Now I hope it can carry on because Mildenhall means something in speedway. It’s a very special club.”

And then there was... MILDENHALL were forced to pull out of Friday’s National League match at Eastbourne because they had only one rider, Matt Marson, available to race.
“We tried everything to get some kind of team together,” said copromoter James Easter, “but we couldn’t get close to it. We warned Eastbourne about the situation the Sunday before the Friday date.
“We offered to go there on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. But they said no to that.
“Ryan Kinsley, Josh Bailey and Sam Bebee all had work commitments on Friday they couldn’t get out of. These guys need to work to afford to ride speedway.
“Danny Ayres and Jordan Jenkins are injured, and Drew Kemp had committed to attend Ipswich’s end-of-season evening, with his family. After all, he is a Witches contracted rider.
“Most National League riders have packed up for the year, and Kevin (Jolly) had two non-contracted three-point riders turn down the offer of a guest booking. This match should have gone ahead not at the end of October, but in mid-summer when it was scheduled.”
Fen Tigers team manager Phil Kirk added: “That the match was at Eastbourne is a factor. It’s one of the most difficult tracks to ride, and any guest, who is not one of the top riders in the league, knows he’s probably not going to score many points there.”
The original fixture on July 14 was called off by Eastbourne because England were playing Belgium that afternoon in Russia in the World Cup third place play-off.

n BOTH the Championship and National League tables will remain incomplete at the end of the season with three regular season fixtures outstanding.
The abandonment of Monday’s Workington v Lakeside meeting will leave the Championship one match short, whilst in the third tier, the Eastbourne v Mildenhall and Buxton v Coventry clashes have not been staged.
