■  King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presents the Birgit Nilsson Prize to Nina Stemme at a ceremony at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm on October 11. The award to Stemme, the fourth recipient—but first Swede to be honoured with it—of the $1m prize carries special significance in Nilsson’s centenary year

National Theatre in Bratislava. Long Beach Opera has promoted Jennifer Rivera, the former mezzo-soprano who had been its Director of Development, to Executive Director and CEO. Kristiina Poska will become Musikdirektor of Theater Basel from the start of the 201920 season. Leslie Suganandarajah is to become Musikdirektor of the Salzburger Landestheater from the start of next season. George Petrou is to succeed Laurence Cummings as Artistic Director of the International Handel Festival in Göttingen from the beginning of the 2021-22 season. Omer Meir Wellber will become Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester in September 2019. Klaus Mäkelä has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic from August 2020. François-Xavier Roth is extending his contract as Gürzenich-Kapellmeister and Generalmusikdirektor of Oper Köln until

the end of the 2021-22 season. Bryan Hymel has joined Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts as Vice President. Barbara Hannigan has been appointed a Visiting Artist at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. Awards Matthew Aucoin, the composer and conductor who is Artist in Residence of LA Opera, has been named a 2018 MacArthur Fellow. Teodor Currentzis has been named Commander of the Order of the Phoenix by Greece.

In the annual Musical America Awards, Anthony Roth Costanzo has been named Vocalist of the Year. At the 2018 UK Theatre Awards, the Achievement in Opera category was won by David Pountney and Tomáš Hanus for their artistic leadership of Welsh National Opera.
