Opera for All: ENO 50th Anniversary Gala English National Opera at the London Coliseum, October 10 In the spirit of full disclosure: I worked at English National Opera during the artistically high-flying, risk-taking years when Mark Elder, David Pountney and Peter Jonas were at the helm and I have, more recently, co-devised and produced a gala in honour of Lord Harewood at the Coliseum, so I am fully aware of what very tricky beasts such occasions are. There is seldom enough time or money for rehearsal or production and the goodwill and availability of artists can dictate the choice of repertory.
There have been many rumblings and concerns over the current state of affairs at ENO and the uncertainty of its future. All may not be well, but I think, even on the evidence of this very mixed bag of an event, there are grounds for hope; an essential ENO-ness kept emerging during the course of the evening, still alive and kicking as hard as it could.
Individual contributions shone: a sumptuous start with Sarah Connolly singing ‘Verdant pastures’ (in Amanda Holden’s translation) from Alcina; Alan Opie as richly resonant and darkly nuanced as ever in a scene from Rigoletto that allowed the magnificent chorus to break free from their restrictive serried ranks and show what
