Designer profile

How would you describe your designs? Wildly confident – they are superbly colourful, with an eclectic mix of imagery and a sophisticated flavour, designed for the modern world. The results are patterns that are energetic, creative and of course pleasing to the eye!

How do you go about starting a design? Generally, it starts with my own photography and days out – to places such as Longleat, Kew Gardens, theatre trips, safari parks, the Yorkshire Dales – anything that inspires me really.

What would be your dream project? A boutique urban hotel would be great; it would be something that you could go really wild on in terms of colour and pattern. I love contemporary and hip hotels and would love to design a statement wall or fabric collection for one, such as Karim Rashid’s Semiramis in Athens or the Sanderson in London.

I think it would also be very interesting to do a project for the film director Tim Burton – designing a wallpaper or a mural with conceptual undertones and splashes of colour!

What do you like most and least about the design process? My favourite part is seeing the finished article in situ, or printed on to a roll of wallpaper or beautiful piece of silk. My least favourite is not getting a perfect colour match!

What is your favourite of your own products? I think it has to be the Wildside pattern because it has become a signature design for me. People often recognise my work through that design.

What are you working on now? My new collections, which will be revealed at 100% Design at Earl’s Court in London later on this year.
