Twelve months and 13 issues in music
Welcome to our annual round-up of the best of the best: the 10 recordings each month selected for an Editor’s Choice accolade as well as a reprise of the recordings that received a Gramophone Classical Music Award in September. Rarely has a single year (during which we reviewed around 1400 recordings) produced such a constant stream of fabulous music-making of repertoire both familar and new (be it of music of our time or music rescued from obscurity and perhaps hundreds of years old). Once again, pianists have come to the fore (something we’re looking at in closer detail in our next issue of Gramophone) but there have been delights across all the genres. The Gramophone Classical Music Awards this year took a new step upwards thanks both to the wonderful array of recordings to choose from but also due to the Medici stream which, to date, has been watched by over 90,000 people, making it a major date in the classical music world’s diary. We hope you’ll find much to enjoy in the pages that follow. And we’ve also inserted links to the many podcasts we’ve made this year that hopefully will illuminate many of our chosen recordings. The bulk of recordings are also linked to the Qobuz, providing the opportunity to stream in hi-res sound. James Jolly December 2018
