INTERVIEW Spideralex Insurgente io Rad You are an active part of the Calafou experiment, a squat ed place near Barcelona, with dif erent initiatives hosted in a shared space. What are you doing there, and why did you decide to join? Calafou is a project that started in 2011 in an antique industrial textile colony abandoned for decades and located in a polluted valley among the ruins of patriarcapitalism. The place is being actually bought by its community of inhabitants enabling them to set up a social lodging cooperative, productive and experimental projects aiming towards political autonomy + self-management + free culture. It is also a space of freedom for organizing events aimed at expanding situated knowledge from dif erent communities working towards appropriated, free and emancipator technologies and techniques. Ideally Calafou wants to be a space where activists and social movements can find infrastructure to achieve their own meetings, goals, dreams. Currently, all the space is being rehabilitated with our little hands and hearts and the support of hundreds of visitors who have come around. Calafou is a lot of things at the same time, chaos, entropy, harmony, consensus, conflict, hate, love, failure, success, mistakes, correct answers… Calafou is an hallucinated dream of what could be a space where everyone would investigate, invent and maintain appropriated techniques. It contains all the complexities of what building and maintaining your own infrastructure entails. Unfortunately, we are still largely dependent on capitalism for making a life, and we still have a long way to go towards autonomy, but I guess that the only utopia we can embody nowadays in this twisted crazy violent world is the utopia of the community. So here we are, struggling, doubting, wondering but having a lot of fun in the process. + info: https://calafou.org/ http://wiki.calafou.org/index.php/Events http://www.makery.info/en/2017/05/17/hack-the-earth-un-laboratoire-collectif-ecologique-et-decadentiste/ Can you tell me more about the Lorea project, and how it works technically and politically? The project arises from a loose collective of people concerned about security and privacy in the social web, all of them with a background of free software and technological activism. Its launch was held in Madrid at the 2009 Hackmeeting, an annual gathering of hackers. Two already existing networks based on Elgg (the most common free social 14 Neural — ISSUE 61
