His his early releases were inspired by his night-long digital four-deck looping experiments. Underscored by a sinister mood and barely-there negative space grooves, his music is shot through with the possibility of everything falling apart. goodmoondeer.com, unfiled.online 3 Paper Dollhouse “Glass Tower” From Empty Rave (MoonDome) Paper Dollhouse is the project alias of musician and artist Astrud Steehouder. It’s both a solo and group project, frequently collaborating with artist and photographer Nina Bosnic and Asher Levitas (Planet Mu/Old Apparatus), who produced the album The Sky Looks Different Here (2018). “Glass Tower” is lifted from Empty Rave on Astrud’s MoonDome label. Stripping back early 1990s rave to its core ambience, “Glass Tower” is “the echo of jungle tekno as heard resonating across a cold North London night”. instagram.com/ paperdollhouses, moondomerecords. bandcamp.com 4 Qasim Naqvi “No Tongue” From Teenages (Erased Tapes) On his first Erased Tapes album Teenages, released in May, Pakistani-American composer Qasim Naqvi summons all his sounds on an analogue modular synthesizer. Variously tonal, textural and rhythmic, the music evolves and grows over the album’s six pieces, shifting from micro-sonics into something bigger, brighter and anthemic. Naqvi previously established himself as a composer for dance, theatre, film and installation based art. He also drums in the trio Dawn Of Midi. qasim-naqvi.com, erasedtapes.com 5 Ricardo Donoso “Disconnected Visions” From Calibrate (Denovali) Composer, percussionist and electronic musician Ricardo Donoso is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He studied composition in the US at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, and he now lives in Boston. His activities range from drumming in avant metal group Ehnahre to soundtracking films like Homegrown: The Counter Terror Dilemma (2016) and Casimiro Effect. His various projects include the psychedelic noise band FiliaMotSa and the free rock group Praag. Founded in 2007, FiliaMotSa (also Filiamotsa Soufflant Rhodes) featured himself on drums and Emilie Weber on amplified violin, among others, and ex-The Ex vocalist GW Sok guested on their 2015 album Like It Is. 11 Pas Musique “The Phoenix” From The Phoenix (Alrealon Musique) Pas Musique have gone through various iterations since emerging from Brooklyn in 1995 as the solo project of founder Robert L Pepper. In 2018 Pas Musique played out as a four piece electronics group with krautrock undertones consisting of Jon V Worthley, Michael Durek, Jesse Fairbairn and Pepper. Their collaborators include Faust, Rapoon, z’ev, Philippe Petit, Polish duo HATI, Chester Hawkins, Jim Tuite and more. pasmusique.net, alrealon.com 14 Daniel Carter/Tobias Wilner/Djibril Toure/Federico Ughi “Canal Street (Wire Mix)” From New York United (577 Records) Bringing together New York downtown free jazz saxophonist, clarinettist and flautist Daniel Carter, Tobias Wilner from Danish electronic band Blue Foundation, Wu-Tang Clan bass player Djibril Toure and longtime Carter associate, Italian drummer Federico Ughi, this stellar international quartet have combined the classic sound of the New York avant garde (John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, etc) with electronic manipulation and production on their debut album. Since 2013 she’s played at clubs across Europe, including Berlin’s Tresor and London’s Corsica Studios, making music that falls somewhere between ambient, experimental and a hazy techno aesthetic. Gafner has also performed with free improvisors (na)PALMT(h)REE, doom metal group The Ocean, jazz outfit Sha’s Feckel and dark ambient rockers The Fawn. soundcloud.com/mess-noir, vandalizmrecords.com 15 Deaf Center “Red Glow” From Low Distance (Sonic Pieces) Norwegian duo Deaf Center are Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland, who started out “as both friends and enemies at the age of ten in the small town of Langesund”. So far they have made three albums: Pale Ravine (2005) and Owl Splinters (2011) on Type, and this year’s Low Distance on Sonic Pieces. Outside Deaf Center, Totland has released two solo piano albums, and Skodvin has performed under his own name, as Svarte Greiner and in various collaborative projects. He also runs Miasmah Recordings. sonicpieces.com 16 Josiah Steinbrick “Fo Barro” From Fragments Du Monde Flottant (Bongo Joe) Los Angeles based producer/composer Josiah Steinbrick’s “hyper-obsession with rhythm as sculpture began with the formation of his BANANA ensemble in 2014”. There followed a series of collaborations with Luis Pérez Ixoneztli, violinist Sudan Archives and Philadelphia free jazz fixture Elliott Levin, which preceded his first collection of solo works – a “nine-part exploration of concrete wilderness for percussion and electronics” titled Meeting Of Waters. Elsewhere he has produced and recorded with Cate Le Bon, Devendra Banhart, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gruff Rhys, and more. Most recently he has been focusing on his pending duo release with polyphonic saxophonist Sam Gendel. bongojoe.ch 17 Labelle “Playing At The End Of The Universe” From Orchestre Univers (InFiné Music) Jérémy Labelle was born in Rennes, France, to a father from the Indian Ocean island of La Réunion, and a Metropolitan French mother. Through his family roots, Labelle discovered the politicised music of maloya, which dates back to the days of French colonisation and slavery. While training as a mixer, he began making parallels between Underground Resistance and issues raised by Réunionnais musicians. He has since moved to La Réunion. Recorded on a three date tour of the island, his third live album Orchestre Univers is released this month. labelle.re, infine-music.com 18 Rev Magnetic “Sunny Windy Winter Morning (Rainbows Spanning The Valley)” From Versus Universe (Rock Action) The Glasgow based band Rev Magnetic revolve around the core of guitarist, vocalist and performer Luke Sutherland, whose CV stretches back over 25 years of work with, among others, Mogwai, Long Fin Killie, Bows, Music AM and Jomi Massage. In 2018 Rev Magnetic released the single “Like No Girl That Ever Was” via Imminent Joy/Bandcamp. Rev Magnetic also feature Gift Horse’s Audrey Bizouerne on bass, vocals, sampler and guitar, Gregor Emond on guitar and Sam Leighton on drums. revmagnetic.com, rockaction.co.uk 19 Aidan Baker & N “230316 Wuppertal (Wire Tapper edit)” From Doppellive (Midira) Guitarists Aidan Baker and Hellmut Neidhardt aka N’s duo collaboration began when they decided to tour together in 2016. Individually, they had started their respective careers in different parts of the world around the turn of the millennium. N has amassed a discography pushing 40 solo and collaborative releases. Musician and writer Baker regularly played in and around Toronto, Chicago, New York and elsewhere across North America, and is now based in Berlin. Heather himself started releasing music in 2017 via Ninja Tune founders Coldcut’s resurrected label Ahead Of Our Time. 12 Milena Glowacka “Try Out On You (edit)” From Radiance (FALK) Polish born producer and performer Milena Glowacka is based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Since 2013 she’s played at clubs across Europe, including Berlin’s Tresor and London’s Corsica Studios, making music that falls somewhere between ambient, experimental and a hazy techno aesthetic.
