Welcome to our annual Digs Guide, your go-to guide for fieldwork experience and digging highlights in 2019. With summer approaching, projects all around the UK and Ireland are gearing up for excavation; over the following pages, we will explore some of the fantastic archaeological opportunities taking place this year.

Listed projects span a wide range of historical periods, including prehistoric settlements, Anglo-Saxon burial grounds, a medieval friary, and a post-medieval village. We have highlighted a diverse selection of different types of excavations, from smaller local-society digs to larger field schools, as well as projects to fit all levels of experience and all budgets, plus activities to suit all ages.

These pages can only hold a selection of projects, though – to find the complete list of digs and their full details, visit www.archaeology.co.uk/ digs, where you can browse by region, date, cost, time period, and many more criteria. Most digs have limited capacity: to avoid disappointment, remember to book as early as possible. Have a wonderful summer digging – do let us know how you get on!
