Original projects to inspire your own self-build or renovation

The perfect blend When Baufritz (01223 235 632; was briefed to design an architecturally modern house that blended into its rural surroundings, the company turned to traditional building materials for inspiration. The exterior of the timber-framed property has a smoothed, finished flint surface, which is teamed with wood cladding, contemporary glazing and a clay tile roof. Prices for a Baufritz home start from £2,000 per square metre.

Well-connectedVine Architecture (020 7377 5465; has recently completed the refurbishment, reconfiguration and rebuilding of a top-f loor apartment in east London. Light washes through the wall-to-wall roof lights in the double dual-pitched roof, with the spruce rafters partly exposed inside. Outside, Accoya decking complements the smoked oak f looring inside, with a bold spiral staircase connecting the timber to a second, rooftop terrace.

City upgrade This converted London bakery has been remodelled with side and roof extensions by Ivo Carew (020 3774 0354; ivocarew. com). The £208,000 project linked the detached main building with the adjacent brick properties. This created additional living space, a roof terrace and an extra bedroom on the top floor, with views on three sides.
