The new generation
How long did it take to develop the rug design? It was completed in the carpet design course of my junior year, and it took about one month.
Were you influenced by other rug designs you have seen? I got inspiration from a lot of Chinese carpets. I read many books, magazines and websites, from which I saw the modern development and innovation of Chinese carpets. Traditional Chinese-style carpets pay attention to symmetry and rules. Thinking of traditions, I was also influenced by Chinese ink painting to add some randomness to the design.
A new addition to this year’s Domotex asia/CHINAFLOOR in Shanghai was the Chinese Original Carpet Design Show. The design platform for young creatives aimed to explore new trends in carpet design. Fifty Chinese designers took part in the competition and 25 were selected for the final display at DACF in March. COVER Editor Lucy Upward was part of the jury selecting the final designs. Whilst giving out an award at the ceremony she chose two winners to feature in COVER, both designed by students from the Hangzhou Guomei Architectural Design Institute. In both cases the rugs were made by Shandong Yangxin Ruixin Group Co. Ltd.
Do you work with similar ideas and aesthetics in your textile work? I also use Chinese elements in my other designs. I like to find textures or patterns in nature, recreate them and apply them in my textile work.
How did you choose the colour palette? I used colours that reflect Chinese design. Soft, elegant blue-green with deep red and the colour of ink give the design an elegant Chinese style.
Did the company making the rug change much of your original design? The final aesthetic is slightly different to my original design due to the handwork and the selection of wool colours, but it is generally similar.
Was it exciting to see your design made real? Is there anything you would change? Of course, I am very excited to see my design turned into a physical object, because it means my design has a real commercial value.
Is this the first rug you have designed? Would you like to design more rugs? Yes, this is the first carpet I designed, and also the first time I got involved in carpet production. If there was an opportunity, I would be very willing to design more carpets. I am also willing to contribute my own strength to innovation in the carpet industry. Thank you!
