Marketplace Report 140
Summer 2019 Summer 2019
What changes are ABC seeing in 2019? We are restructuring the showroom. With the price of Manhattan real estate, there is no way we can come up with a sustainable business model on that level. We are currently rescaling and transforming the space. How people shop has changed dramatically. Mass market rugs have got a lot better and mediocre product just doesn’t cut it anymore.
What are customers looking for today? People’s homes are trophies more than ever. The focus of people’s spending used to be on couture clothing and handbags but for this new generation it is all about the home. People are spending more time at home now. Heating and air con is pretty standard so it’s not that they need the rug for warmth. Open plan living is more popular, even in older houses. Are traditional designs making a comeback? Our best-selling rugs are our recycled yarn rugs, with the ombred look. The concept has moved on to a hundred different collections now, like Aquasilk and Alchemy. You could argue they are traditional designs but also contemporary. So
I would say happy rainbow colours are selling well. We also see a trend back to antiques and traditionals but nothing too academic, it is more about the worn, shabby chic, vintage rugs. That is a trend that has been coming and going.
Is handmade important to the buying public? The market is two extremes. People are either buying something decorative and fun to use in a rental apartment or somewhere they are going to be for a year or two or they are looking for a special product to fill a residence they plan to live in for a while. We are going a little bit back to the idea of ‘collect don’t decorate’, a little bit more eclectic. It is more about putting a beautiful collection of things together, to make a home. I think the ‘greige’ interiors look is finally coming to an end.
How do you see the future of handmade rugs? Production is going to drop. If you look at what is happening in India right now, if Mr Gandhi does win they are going to push in a minimum wage and this will really affect the handmade carpet business. Paying people the wages they should make will give back a prestige to handmade
