HALI magazine was founded in the late 1970s as a forum for those interested in antique rug and textile art. Many in the original audience— whether academics, dealers or collectors— were excited by traditional woven art and artefacts they had encountered during their worldwide travels in the days of the hippie trail. The publication has presented esoteric and exotic textiles as art ever since. Early editions were printed in dual languages (English and German). The Vol. 1 No. 1 editorial introduces the title as ‘the first journal dedicated to covering all aspects of the Oriental carpet and textile world’. It continues, ‘It has no prejudices and we hope that as Hali gains international respect as the leading medium for the dissemination of information, ideas and discoveries, more people will want to be associated with it.’ Back issues of HALI became collector’s items themselves for a time, often selling at auction alongside featured rugs, before the whole back catalogue was digitised and made available to subscribers as the HALI Archive, increasing its reach as a valued research tool, in 2014.

THE ART OF THE RUG
Launched by HPL in 2005 to cover the growing market of modern handmade rugs, COVER has grown into the world’s leading magazine in the field of contemporary carpets, fabrics and interior design, changing its name from Modern Carpets and Textiles in 2009. Our international readership comprises rug retailers, department store buyers, specifiers, architects and interior designers as well as buying agents, manufacturers and a host of rug professionals. We aim to cover all aspects of the industry, from encouraging textile design students, to young brands set up by recent graduates, to creative textile use in fine art and interior applications, to the biggest brands making handmade rugs in the time-honored way, all the while keeping upto-date with cutting-edge style and designer collaborations. We are equally inspired by the continuation and celebration of rugmaking traditions as by those that push the boundaries of what is possible, introducing the latest technology and experimenting with new techniques to keep weaving sustainable, viable, creative and alive.

HPL today While HALI and COVER remain at the heart of HPL, a whole series of other activities contribute to making the company all that it is today. We design and publish specialist books on rugs and textiles for museums and private collectors, as well as auction catalogues and promotional material for our advertisers; we manage social media accounts and marketing campaigns; we introduce companies and buyers to new markets via exhibitions at international fairs such as Istanbul Carpet Week, Domotex asia/CHINAFLOOR and the China (Qinghai) International Carpet Exhibition; we have also organised 14 editions of the annual Carpet Design Awards with DOMOTEX Hannover, the rug industry’s most prestigious and coveted awards. Since 2013, we have offered HALI Tours, so far taking eleven small groups to far-flung destinations—including Morocco, India, Japan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, England, Romania, Spain and Portugal— to see important rugs and textiles that are not normally on public display, allowing us to meet with our subject and contacts first hand.
