contributors this issue brian newbould is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Hull and, in addition to his celebrated completions of Schubert’s unfinished symphonies, the author and editor of several books on the composer, including Schubert: the music and the man (Gollancz, 1997), Schubert and the symphony (Toccata Press, 1992) and Schubert the progressive (Ashgate, 2003). His newly adapted suite of music from Schubert’s opera Die Zauberharfe was given its first performance in Vienna in May and is scheduled for UK premieres, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, early next year.

rita steblin is the author of Die Unsinnsgesellschaft: Franz Schubert, Leopold Kupelwieser und ihr Freundeskreis (Böhlau, 1998) and A history of key characteristics in the 18th and early 19th centuries, now in its second edition (University of Rochester Press, 2002). Based in Vienna, she continues to research and publish on 18th- and early 19thcentury composers, particularly Beethoven and Schubert. chris walton is an Honorary Professor at Africa Open Institute, Stellenbosch University. His most recent book, Lies and epiphanies: composers and their inspiration from Wagner to Berg, was published by University of Rochester Press in 2014. arnold whittall’s extensive writings include The music of Britten and Tippett: studies in themes and techniques, Musical composition in the 20th century and Exploring 20th-century music: tradition and innovation. He continues to work on British music after Britten. veronica mary franke is professor of musicology at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa. Her publications include Palestrina’s imitation masses: a study of compositional procedures (Palestrina Foundation, 2007) and articles on a wide range of other musical topics. christopher mabley is author of Bach’s authentic chorale harmony (2015), a new course on harmonisation techniques appropriate to this genre. He is Musical Director of Northampton Philharmonic Choir and teaches at Junior Trinity Conservatoire in SouthEast London. matthias range works as a researcher in history and music at the University of Oxford. He is author of Ceremonial and music at British coronations (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and British royal and state funerals (Boydell & Brewer, 2016). A study of British royal weddings will be published in due course. patricia howard’s most recent book, The modern castrato: Gaetano Guadagni and the coming of a new operatic age, was published by Oxford University Press in 2014.
