NEW RELEASES ON WARNER CLASSICS AND ERATO MARIE-NICOLE LEMIEUX MER(S) brings together three sumptuous late-19th century works for female voice and orchestra: Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer, Elgar’s Sea Pictures and, in a world premiere recording, an ode-symphonie by Victorin Joncières entitled La mer. Following her triumphant performance as Cassandre in Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Marie-Nicole Lemieux embarks on this musical sea voyage. QUATUOR ÉBÈNE The ensemble is marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a global tour of 21 countries. In the course of their Beethoven Around the World tour, the Ébène will make live recordings in seven different global cities. This first release, recorded at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, comprises the first two Razumovsky Quartets, op 59 No 1 and op 59 No 2. BEATRICE RANA Beatrice Rana, in the words of the New York Times, is a pianist who “has ferocious technique but is distinguished by her musical intelligence”. Here she plays virtuosic, poetic works that evoke the transitional early years of the 20th century: piano transcriptions of Stravinsky’s The Firebird and Petrushka, and Ravel’s Miroirs and La Valse. ALEXANDRE THARAUD A tribute to composers associated with the courts of the French kings Louis XIV, XV and XVI. Lully, Rameau, Charpentier and François Couperin stand beside lesser-known masters: d’Anglebert, Forqueray, Royer, Duphly and Balbastre. “I’ve always been attracted by French music of this period,” says Tharaud, adding that when he plays the Rameau prelude, “It’s like being alone at Versailles, opening the doors and entering those huge, imposing rooms.” JAKUB JÓZEF ORLIN ´ SKI Facce d’amore, follows his first solo album, Anima Sacra includes eight world premiere recordings spanning some 85 years of the baroque period. The are by Handel, Cavalli, Alessandro Scarlatti, Bononcini, Conti, Hasse, Orlandini, Predieri and Matteis. Orlin´ski is again partnered by the instrumentalists of Il Pomo d’Oro and their Principal Conductor Maxim Emelyanychev. DONG HYEK LIM MARTHA ARGERICH Dong Hyek Lim takes two pianistic roles on this all-Rachmaninov album: soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Alexander Vedernikov in the much-loved Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, and duo partner to his mentor, the great Martha Argerich, in the composer’s two-piano transcription of the enthralling and enigmatic Symphonic Dances.
