KALVIN’S KING FOR

TON-UP LEEDS

HIGHLY-RATED midfi elder Kalvin Phillips bagged the only goal of the game as Leeds celebrated their centenary with a hard-fought victory against Birmingham City at Elland Road.

It looked as though it could be another frustrating afternoon for the Whites until Phillips fi red past Lee Camp on 65 minutes to get the party started. The victory lifted Leeds to second.

“Sometimes God put things in the right place,” said delighteed Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa. “Phillips is playing at Leeds and now he will stay in the history of the club for this goal.”

BOWEN GETS OFF TO DREAM START ... but it’s pain for Black Cat Parkinson

MATT Miazga popped up with a 98th-minute winner to help Mark Bowen’s reign as Reading manager get off to the perfect start.

The game against high-fly-

ing Preston was goalless un-

til Miazga fired home at the death and lifted the Royals out of the relegation zone. A

cautious Bowen, who needs to win over sceptical fans, said:

“I thought that we deserved it, but with just one win in seven, we can’t go patting ourselves on the back.

“We’ll only do that when we get a run of results and start climbing that table.”

O’S BOSS FLETCHER: I’LL TRY TO CONTINUE JUSTIN’S WORK

While it was joy for Bowen,

it was pain for new Sunder-

land manager Phil Parkinson.

The Black Cats lost 1-0

at second-placed Wycombe,

whose manager Gareth

Ainsworth had been linked with the Sunderland job.
