Mallard returned to steam between March 25, 1986, and August 27, 1988, and hauled a special train on July 3, 1988 to mark the exact 50 th anniversary of its world record run. One of the main reasons why the National Railway Museum decided not to resteam it for the 75th anniversary was the fact that there are three A4s operating on the main line today, and adding a fourth would not make commercial sense . In 1986, it hauled a series of British Rail dining train trips from Marylebone to Stratford-upon-Avon and back, and on October 26 that year was seen passing Blackthorn, Oxfordshire, on one of them.
