Investment decisions on models that will be on sale then will already be looming large. Why 2032? It’s the year by which the government proposes to ban the sale of all non-electric cars. The shock news announced in February is in its final public consultation phase. At Autocar, we’re working on our own response, which we will publish next week, well ahead of the 31 July deadline. While new arrivals are now coming thick and fast, electric cars still feel very new and vary wildly in capability and approach. Even for the learned Autocar reader, there remains much to discover about the cars and issues around the technology, as our guide to the world of EVs aims to show (p34). The government itself would do well to read such a guide. There is so much to enjoy about electric cars but, in forcing EVs onto people, you risk alienating them, particularly when there are car users for whom the technology may never be suitable. Besides, it has drawbacks of its own that no one in authority seems ready to face. One intriguing response to electric cars has been to wonder what oil companies make of it. Their collective response has now suddenly arrived: the fascinating prospect of synthetic fuels changing everything (p14). The debate over the future of clean transport must surely now expand, not be choked off in just six weeks’ time.
