British Youth Music Theatre announces National Audition tour 2021 British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT), the UK’s leading music theatre company for young people, has announced the dates for its 2021 National Auditions tour. Running from January to February 2021, the tour will cover 19 cities across the UK and Ireland in search of the next generation of musical theatre stars.
Open to anyone aged 11-21, the auditions require no previous experience or preparation and consist of a 2-hour creative group workshop led by a professional director, musical director and choreographer. Auditionees will be marked on their acting, singing, dancing and ability to work as part of a team. Those who are successful will be offered a place in one of BYMT’s new musical theatre shows next season.
Gaining a place offers young people the opportunity to train with theatre professionals, meet with like-minded young people from all over the UK, take part in creating a new musical from scratch, and star in a full-scale musical theatre show in prestigious venues around the UK. BYMT alumni include Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Charlotte Richie and Laurence Samuels.
Honor, who is 19 and from Dublin, said, ‘What is unique about BYMT is that you are involved in a brand new musical from start to finish. The shows and getting a taste of the industry really showed me how much I love musical theatre and how I want to pursue it as a career. I loved every second of the BYMT shows. The professional standard and environment make each performance feel like you are stepping into a West End or Broadway show.’
BYMT executive producer Jon Bromwich said, ‘BYMT plays a vital role in investing in the future of music theatre. This year has been a real challenge for the arts industry and we can’t wait to get back to normal and see new exceptional young talent in our next exciting season of musical theatre. Each auditionee is carefully observed and graded by top industry professionals, who will see about 1,500 potentials, resulting in 300 young people being invited into the BYMT company.’
Actor auditions and musician auditions can be booked online at www. britishyouthmusictheatre. org/auditions or by phoning 020 8563 7725.

Performers Ayesha Fazal and Dominic Coffey in PETRICHOR by ThickSkin
Brave new world: VR theatre comes to schools This Autumn, Manchester’s ThickSkin theatre company will present a 360°, live-action and animated virtual reality performance, enabling audiences around the UK to safely return to theatres.
Entitled PETRICHOR, the dystopian play will be accessible to watch anywhere in a theatre building using socially-distanced seating and VR headsets, or through immersive virtual reality at home. The company hopes that it will encourage audiences to re-engage with theatre-going and boost revenues for theatres around the country.
The show is part of ThickSkin’s new series of MATCHBOX productions, which aim to engage a range of audiences with theatre, including young people and non-traditional audiences. Created by the company’s associate artistic director Jonnie Riordan, with co-director Jess Williams and animator Ben Walden, PETRICHOR is set in a dystopian parallel universe and explores escape and connection through two performers, an original soundtrack and projected animation.
In order to support learning and access to the play in schools and colleges, ThickSkin has developed a Discover bundle priced at £200+VAT and suitable for students aged 13+. It has been designed with curriculum links for GCSE and A Level and offers 6 months of online access to the PETRICHOR VR film, a behind-the-scenes documentary including interviews, and additional teaching resources including tasks led by the company’s artistic director. A live Zoom Q&A with members of the company is also available for an extra £50+VAT, as well as an onsite visit and performance for £500+VAT.
Artistic director Neil Bettles said, ‘Our MATCHBOX productions are the ideal opportunity for us to experiment and find new ways of creating. I want ThickSkin to be innovative in the way we connect with audiences, and creating a piece that can be accessed in lots of different ways feels like an exciting response to these uncertain times.
‘As a company with a younger audience, I’m excited about the potential of PETRICHOR to present our trademark visual style in a whole new way. Audiences will be at the centre of the action, experiencing the world in 360°, and in touching distance of the virtual performers, providing an immersive, intimate experience that races towards the finish line.’
The tour runs from 26 October to 13 December 2020. Tickets for the play and booking for the Discover bundle are now available at www.thickskintheatre.co.uk.
