any years ago at my all-girls boarding school, a novel passed around in the dorms that probably provoked more discussion than any book we were supposed to be reading for GCSE English. Jilly Cooper’s Riders gripped us in a way that, quite frankly, Silas Marner or A Winter’s Tale never did.
Cooper wrote about sex, romance, ambition and feminism in such a free and joyful way. Its many sequels were grabbed up and given as presents, read voraciously and also told us quite a lot about male and female relationships. So Richard Barber’s interview with her is a must-read this month.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover changed social mores for a different generation in the 1960s, and Jonathan Este reports on the seminal court case that changed Britain forever. When I was a teenager Esther Rantzen was a heroine of mine – an incisive journalist who created Childline, a way for neglected and abused children to access support and advice. More recently she did the same for an older generation with The Silver Line. Her full and frank thoughts on loneliness will strike a chord with many of us.
In this issue we also have perfect comfort food recipes for November, a guide to healthy eating and the ultimate gift guide for Christmas.
