Author’s note: for brevity when writing her diaries and notebooks, Beth frequently shortened names to a letter such as ‘A’ for her husband, Andrew. Similarly place and plant names were often abbreviated. In editing them, I have used the full names of both people and plants.

Beth called Christopher Lloyd either Christo or ‘C’. I have used Christo throughout as that is how he was known universally by his close friends – and also by many others.

Where names are marked with an asterisk, brief biographical notes can be found at the back of the book.

In a few cases, the botanical names of plants have changed since her diaries and notebooks were written. In these instances, I have retained Beth’s originals. The index includes current names.
