It is almost thirty years since the Great Storm of 1987 tore through the gardens at Elmstead Market. While its effects were devastating particularly on our woodland area, it enabled us to start a new chapter of the garden. Three decades later, I hope the story of its creation and the beautiful plants growing there continues to bring joy and inspiration and dispels once and for all the myth that gardening in the shade is a curse rather than a blessing.
I am particularly grateful to Pimpernel Press for reprinting Shade Garden. This beautifully produced book will bring the treasures that can be found under the dappled shade of our woodland garden to a new generation of gardeners.
