pieces of china he has collected. ‘They help to articulate space in shady places.’ As he is a man of impeccable taste, it is all rather fine. ‘My sister comes here and she says: “That is Uncle Alban’s service he took to Oxford and that is Aunt Ruth’s and that was that beautiful Chinese pot you broke.”’
They are a quirky touch in a garden that is born of a love of plants and a confidence to create a sense of place that doesn’t have to be on parade all year round: each season has its charms as you walk through − some quiet; others, such as the summer carpet of cosmos, zinnias, nicotiana and Verbena bonariensis, rather louder, but confined to a small border in front of the hammam. ‘The recipe is quite basic,’ says Gibbs. ‘Not too many startlements.’
