There is a scene in the 1980 comedy movie Airplane! in which the hero must take charge of a jumbo jet full of passengers and bring it safely to the ground – despite being terrified of even setting foot on a plane. One of the enduring images of the film comes as he begins to perspire. Not just a little, but a lot. Great streams of the stuff come gushing down his brow and onto his shirt as he wrestles with the controls while receiving frantic instructions over the radio. The sweat is not real, of course. It’s a deliberately shoddy special effect. That’s what makes it funny.

A less humorous version of this image – of someone struggling to pilot a stricken craft – could easily come to mind if you consider the executives at the controls of the world’s airlines right now. (And, as you might have spotted, our cover art by Paul Collicutt is inspired by the poster that was used to promote Airplane! on its release.) In his cover story on page 44 John Arlidge explains how the pandemic has ravaged the aviation industry, and what might happen next. Expect some Covid-necessitated changes to shape the business of flying and our experiences of travel for a long time to come.
In a difficult year, opportunities to take pleasure from experiences, places and objects have never felt more valuable. At the same time, the imperative to do so in a thoughtful, considerate way has never been more urgent. This dichotomy is at the heart of two pieces in the magazine. First, Anna Solomon assesses the evolution of the catwalking, air-kissing world of high-fashion (p34). Then we unveil the latest edition of the Spear’s Luxury Index (p51) and, within it, profile 50 innovators shaping our idea of what it me m th m in p means to live well, as we move into 2021. Rather less festive – but no less interesting – is Alec Marsh’s exclusive story about Filippo Noseda’s efforts to take HMRC all the way to the High Court. He and his anonymous client ‘Jenny’ are fighting back against the UK Tax Man’s enforcement of Fatca, a piece of US tax legislation, which they believe breaches data protection law. If they’re successful, consequences will ripple across the world.
