A friend of mine said recently that the most overused phrase this year must be ‘in these difficult times’ – and she loathes it. So, in deference to Lisa, I am going to focus on the positive.
This year we have seen people come together in ways we wouldn’t have dreamed of in 2019. During lockdown people clapped for the NHS, walked miles for charity, worked together to look after vulnerable neighbours and learned new skills. This is not to ignore the tragedy that has hit millions of families around the world, but at this time of year we all need a little joy in our hearts.
So we have a feast of treats for you in this issue. Delia Smith’s recipes will ensure a fail-safe dinner however many people are in your bubble, while our baking ideas are perfect Christmas Eve fodder. Elaine Paige talks about her life as one of our favourite stage stars and her hopes for the future – she’s appearing in panto this year and is determined the show will go on. Our art critic Roderick Conway Morris has composed a quiz to test your knowledge and we have a bumper crop of puzzles. While going to the cinema is off the cards there’s a plethora of seasonal films to stream direct to your living room. And our columnist and best-selling author Maggie Alderson has written an exclusive short story which will warm your hearts.
I doubt anyone is going to remember this year with a great deal of joy but it now seems like there is hope on the horizon, with the advent of effective vaccines and an ever-increasing knowledge of how the covid virus works.
I am going to take advice from Captain Sir Tom Moore, one of our heroes of 2020, whose motto is ‘tomorrow is a good day’, and remain inspired by 23-year-old footballer Marcus Rashford, who took on the government and won a huge victory for children living in food poverty.
From all the team at The Lady, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Here’s to 2021!
