MG’S TAIL IS UP–AND NO WONDER AFTERITS 2020
NOTONLYISMGthe only carbrand other than Teslatopostyear-on-year growth in theUKin2020, butthatgrowthstandsatasubstantial 58%tothe endofOctober.MG’s16,128 salesput it only just behind Dacia, Fiat andSuzukiinthe salescharts. MG’s successhas beenbuilt on value, simply offeringcarsthatappealto rational,value-drivenbuyers. Itscars arenow gettingbettertodrive, too, as ourrecentMG5roadtestrevealed (Autocar,25November).It’scarslike theelectric5thatwillensureMG’s successisnoflashinthe pan. Being able to keep that valuepropositionfor afast-growingrange of electric cars will bringmanytoMGwho arekeento go electric butare priced outofrivals. MG’s Chineseownership will help keep that valuelongterm, too, given howrichChina is in theresources needed to make batteriesinacosteffective way. Allofwhich makesMG’s expansionplans (p6) so tantalising. Don’tbet against itsoonsnappingatthe heelsofevenbiggerUKmarket players.
