KEVLAR SOUNDBOARDS For many years, Phoenix instruments have been available with climate-resistant, high-performance carbon fibre soundboards. These soundboards were originally developed using ultra high power computers and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), allowing their projected sound performance to be assessed in terms of the cumulative effect of parameters such as material properties, board thickness, bridge geometry, acoustic case concept, rib stiffness and mass.
Following these virtual design stages, Dain prototyped his carbon fibre soundboards in smaller grand pianos, refining them until he found his ‘magic formula’. While pianists may not initially be aware they are playing a carbon fibre soundboard, these boards have an open sound with a beautiful sustain and the potential for enormous power, even in smaller instruments such as the Phoenix Models 170 and 130.
In 2019, Phoenix trialled their first Kevlar soundboard made by aircraft part manufacturer Retrac. The resulting Model 130 has a warm, blossoming sound that affords a rich and expansive musical tonality.

THE FUTURE Phoenix claims to be ‘The World’s Most Technologically Advanced Pianos’. For this to remain the case, Dain is driven to keep challenging the design orthodoxies of the late 19th century.
Prototypes for a D3D lever system for both grands and uprights are already being tested. All the parts are 3D printed, including bearings without felt that offer neartotal climate resistance and superior longevity. Other innovations in the pipeline include pneumatic hammers, a piano without bridges, a miniature upright piano with grand piano performance and Kevlar soundboards without ribs. Perhaps most ambitiously of all, Phoenix has patented schemes for composite graphene soundboards, some only a few molecules thick. Graphene may prove to be the ultimate material for soundboards once components of adequate size can be manufactured reliably. With so many exciting accomplishments already in place, there has never been a better time for piano lovers and professional musicians to invest in leading British engineering. For whatever the next quantum leap in acoustic piano technology may be, one thing seems likely: it will be led by Phoenix. IP

A surprisingly high percentage of the sound that comes out of a piano travels through the legs and into the floor. This can both ‘muddy’ the sound and be an annoyance to neighbours. The isolators sweeten the sound of the piano, which becomes more vibrant, transparent and freer. The bass is much cleaner and articulate and the whole piano benefits from a huge leap in clarity.
