A sound investment

Buying a new piano is one of the biggest purchases many of us will make in our lifetimes. The choice we make is likely to have a significant impact on our wellbeing and musical development, so it’s essential to get it right. This is especially true if you are thinking of acquiring an instrument that will eventually be passed on to become a cherished family heirloom.

A number of factors may guide your decision-making. How much space do you have? Which style of casework suits your décor? Do you want an acoustic, digital or hybrid instrument? And – perhaps most importantly – what is your budget? Armed with answers to these questions, your next step should be to try some pianos in person. Only by spending time exploring new instruments will you find the right fit. This guide provides an introduction to 15 of today’s leading piano brands, focusing on their premium instruments for dedicated amateurs, students and professional players. Alongside the best-known names that are justly celebrated for the range and excellence of their instruments, I have included several boutique makers whose superb pianos deserve the consideration of every serious performer.

Each brand profile provides a brief history of the company in question, followed by an overview of their current instruments and the qualities that make them distinctive. Reference is also made to aspects of design or construction that affect sound and playability, without getting swamped in technical details. Prices quoted were sourced online in March 2021 via the websites of reputable retailers across the UK. Throughout these pages you’ll find frequent references to a forthcoming book by International Piano contributor Jeremy Nicholas. I’m extremely grateful to Jeremy for letting me read his proof of The Great Piano Makers, which is due to be published in 2021. This informative historical survey celebrates the brilliant inventors and craftspeople who shaped the development of the piano, from Cristofori to Stuart.
