I would recommend this Scholarship to anyone interested in playing the organ; the Scholarship not only provides you with a firm grounding in organ playing, but also allows you to have a well-rounded education at St Catherine’s, opening the door to many further opportunities.

Emily, former Jennifer Bate Organ Scholar

St Catherine’s School, Bramley invites ambitious and enthusiastic organists to apply for our 2022 Sixth Form Organ Scholarship. THE JENNIFER BATE MEMORIAL ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP The Jennifer Bate Memorial Organ Scholarship is a joint venture between St Catherine’s School, Bramley and Guildford Cathedral. The late Dr Jennifer Bate OBE, a virtuosic international recitalist, has been a longstanding Patron of this Scholarship, and founded the Jennifer Bate Organ Academy at St Catherine’s, which still continues in her memory. The Scholarship is available for girls joining the Sixth Form (Year 12) in September 2022 (or Year 9 or 10 for an exceptional candidate) and offers:

involvement in a thriving and busy music department, including tuition and hands-on experience in directing and accompanying the Chapel Choir, with the benefit of a first-rate, allround education at a top girls’ school; opportunities within Bramley parish and the professional life of Guildford Cathedral; preparation for organ studies post-18 including scholarships at Oxbridge, conservatoires and other universities. The Jennifer Bate Memorial Organ Scholarship typically covers 20% of Boarders fees, however bursary funds exist to support a full Boarding Bursary for the right applicant. Former Jennifer Bate Scholars have gone on to take up organ scholarships in Oxbridge and elsewhere, including Cathedrals, or have pursued other careers while maintaining a church Director of Music post.
