56. After the ambulance left, he hammered boards over the Big Window & it was dark, day & night. We thought we’d be there forever, creeping around in the mauve shadows eating Marietta biscuits in the loft, washing them down with Andrews Liver Salts. But he gave in in the end, like Mrs Savage said he would if we kept our powder dry. After a week, he brought the blue Cortina round the side of the house & we packed up. Greta held Blackie on the back seat with the sewing machine. Blackie was crying & scratching all the way, as was only natural. She was a cat. People stopped speaking to the Ould Fella after that but Mrs Savage never refused to serve him even though he stopped speaking to us. There was no need for Mrs Savage to get adoption papers. Everyone said we were going to the Post Office for a holiday. We’ve been here since.
