Come on, football... show us some love
As the League Cup First Round draw takes place, we spot the Nottingham Forest vs Notts County tie pop out of the hat. “That’ll be good,” we say. “They must hate each other.” As time goes on and we talk to fans of both sides, it becomes apparent that they actually quite like each other. “That’s weird,” we say. “Let’s send someone to cover the love-in.” The day of the match arrives and gangs of damaged youth/unrepentant looters [delete as applicable] are roaming the cities of England, forcing games to be called off. We keep a close eye on the Nottingham derby... it’s still on. As the game unfolds on the pitch (a 3-3 cracker that goes to penalties), news reports trickle in of a Nottingham police station being firebombed. Text messages are hastily exchanged with FFT’s correspondent. He’s fine but there are a lot of fire engines tearing about. And such was the climate that the issue you hold in your hands came together. Let’s all take a leaf out of the Forest vs County book and give someone a cuddle, duck.

MY FOUR FAVOURITESTORIES THIS MONTH…
1LIONEL MESSI INTERVIEW p56 After a rather good season, Barcelona’s cutting edge tells us he’s feeling sharp on and off the pitch.
2DORTMUND’SWUNDERKIDS p72 The latest instalment of our youth development series focuses on Germany and the Bundesliga champs.
3OWEN COYLE p80 Bolton’s gaffer took time out of his day to talk about everything from managing the world’s top pros to playing Connect 4.
4FOREST VS NOTTS COUNTY p86 Is this the world’s softest derby? A few hundred yards apart, but all good pals? We don’t believe it.
