COMMENT

GOVERNMENTSNEED TO MAKE PEOPLE WANT EVs

QUESTIONSABOUT whether governments should mandatepeopleto do somethingor encourage personal responsibility arequite topical.Yes, we’retalking aboutthe EuropeanUnion’s push to banall nonzero-emissioncarsby2035–effectively bringing it into line with theUK(p12). TheEU’sexistingtargets forCO2 emissions, backed by swingeingfines, have playedahugeroleinpushing car makers to commit to electrifying their line-ups, whichinturn hasboosted the choice, andthereforethe sales, of EVs. However, many buyers still have questionsabout EV prices, charging infrastructure andrange. Some of thoseconcernsare real, but many aremisplaced-and it ’s imperative governmentsaddress them.

EU ruleswill requirememberstates to installEVand hydrogen chargers at regularpointsalong keyroads. And in ourexclusive interview(p16),UK transportdecarbonisation minister Rachel Macleanacknowledgesthe need to improvethe UK’s charging networkand hasa“vision”tomake charging “aseasyasfillingupwith petrol ”. That’sastart, but more hasto be done.Investmentisneeded to not just quellEVconcernsbut also sell theirmanyadvantagesoverICE cars.

Zero-emissioncarsare the future–whether or notpeople welcomeitisnow largelyin thehands of government.
