With the London Jazz Festival looming large the organisers Serious and the Southbank Centre have pulled off a major coup in securing Ornette Coleman (left) for the closing night on 20 November at the Royal Festival Hall. This will be Coleman’s first UK appearance since his acclaimed Meltdown season at the Southbank in 2009 and is a rare opportunity to see this pioneering jazz figure who turned 81 in March. The festival, that’s held in association with BBC Radio 3 and sponsored by Jazzwise, runs from 11-20 November at most major concert venues and jazz clubs across London. Coleman joins a hot list of headliners listed in Jazzwise last month, including McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp, Stefano Bollani, Tommy Smith, Robert Glasper, Phronesis, Henry Threadgill, Empirical, Bill Frisell, Hermeto Pascoal, David Sanborn and many others. The festival’s club and freestage programme has also just been finalised with names to watch out for, including former EST drummer Magnus Öström (pictured below, right), trioVD, Arun Ghosh, Turkish saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin (above) and Charles Gayle and Han Bennink as well as a Scene Iceland showcase of four upcoming Icelandic groups, including the hotly tipped Samúel Jón Samúelsson Big Band, Sunna Gunnlaugs Trio and Ómar Guðjónsson Quartet, at the Barbican Freestage on 12 November. Club and freestage listings highlights include:
