3 Ben LaMar Gay “Aunt Lola And The Quail” From Open Arms To Open Us (International Anthem) Southside Chicago cornettist, composer and eclectic polymath Ben LaMar Gay is “hands down, one of my favourite musicians on the planet today”, says guitarist Jeff Parker. Gay’s 2018 debut Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun made the top five of The Wire’s albums of the year. His follow-up album Open Arms To Open Us is released this month by International Anthem.

4 RAIC “The Intergalactic Church Of Kirk” From Gestalt (Cacophonous Revival Recordings) RAIC (Richmond Avant Improv Collective) formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2015. Their five primary members collaborate with an extensive pool of improvisors, numbering more than 100 players over the span of ten albums and countless live shows exploring jazz, shoegaze, black metal, noise, film music, classical, ambient and rock. This track from their tenth album Gestalt is inspired by Rahsaan Roland Kirk and features Erik Schroeder, Sam Byrd, Fred McGann, Jimmy Ghaphery and Richard Schellenberg., cacophonousrevivalrecordings.bandcamp. com

5 Alberto Nemo “Dolina” From Istar (CNI) Italian musician and composer Alberto Nemo began his career performing sacred music in chapels. His work is characterised by slow, dilated tempos and a voice that passes from an almost imperceptible whisper to a dramatic vibrato. He has released more than 50 albums, appeared on the TV reality show Voice Of Italy, and shared stages with Procol Harum and the painter Mark Kostabi, among many other artists.

6 VILIFY “Road To Eleusis” From Illusion Of Self (Ohm Resistance) The Berlin based VILIFY takes a diverse approach to bass-driven club music. She signed with independent imprint Ohm Resistance, who released her debut LP Illusion Of Self in September. The album’s eight tracks follow her “genre is a social construct” philosophy through a blend of various electronic styles, including jungle, drum ’n’ bass and dub, cultivated from over a decade of performances and regular DJ broadcasts.,

7 Bendik Giske “Flutter” From Cracks (Smalltown Supersound) Emerging from the Norwegian jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Bendik Giske developed his repertoire over two solo albums alongside visual and performance art collaborations such as Wu Tsang’s We Hold Where Study and his own Matter, commissioned by the Riga Biennial.
