– A Garden from a Hundred Packets of Seed –
television or through the gardening press, encouraging this level of expenditure.
I’m not in a position to lecture anyone about expenditure: my garden employs one gardener fulltime and has benefited over the years from a great deal of part-time assistance. I regret none of the expenditure (even the heroic failures), as long as I think that the money was, in principle, well used. But even the most lavish gardener in Great Britain – as it were, the Duchess of Northumberland – would think twice about spending on the large scale at the same rate per square inch that the amateur urban gardener is encouraged to spend on a small back garden.
