– A Garden from a Hundred Packets of Seed –
Garden catalogue. www.sarahraven.com produce seasonal catalogues, available to order or download from the website or by phone 0345 092 0283. There is a book by Dr Raven called The Cutting Garden (1996) which I find has a good attitude. The two large seed catalogues I have referred to are the one I have cited most often, Chiltern Seeds – extremely wide-ranging, and I would say the seeds come cheap, from Crowmarsh Battle Barns, 114 Preston Crowmarsh, Wallingford, OX10 6SL, UK, or www. chilternseeds.co.uk; and Thompson and Morgan, Poplar Lane, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP8 3BU; seeds can be ordered through its international website www.thompson-morgan.com. In the United States, Renee’s Garden, 6060 Graham Hill Rd, Felton, CA 95018, telephone 1.888.880.7228, www.reneesgarden.com, offers some of the varieties cited.
I restricted myself to such a small number of sources in this book because I was interested to keep my recommendations to a bare minimum, but that does not mean that we do not use other sources for seed, both large firms and small. Indeed, we are always on the lookout for rare and unusual plants. One useful source is a botanical garden which runs a distribution scheme for seed. I am a member of the Friends of Oxford Botanic Garden (Rose Lane, Oxford OX1 4AZ).
