– A Garden from a Hundred Packets of Seed –
(6) When handling seedlings, always hold them by the leaves, not by the stem. Always treat them as gently as possible. (7) Water them with a solution of Cheshunt Compound (recommended) or other fungicide to stop them from damping off (being attacked by fungus). Use a fine, upturned rose. (8) Keep young plants in frost-free conditions – again, out of direct sunlight. (9) Gradually acclimatize them to cold weather: ‘harden them off’ before planting them in the garden. (10) Potted-up seedlings and young plants should be given a weekly feed of Phostrogen (recommended) or other soluble fertilizer. (11) Always make sure a young plant is thoroughly watered before it is planted in the garden. A little bonemeal scattered in the hole will help, unless this encourages your dog to dig up the plant. (12) Forcefully remind your cat about the difference between seed trays and litter boxes.
