Editor’s letter DEAR READERS, I always love the run-up to Christmas, but this year seems a little extra-special: the chance to reconnect properly – and safely – with family and friends after last year’s lockdown is something I know millions of us are relishing. It also means a return to festive list-making, party-planning and gift-buying. With that in mind we have corralled our team of columnists and contributors to supply the best advice, opinions and memories when it comes to the festive season. Our advent recipe special has already given me some ideas for home-baked gifts, while gardening columnist Ciar Byrne has taken a masterclass in festive wreath-making. Books guru Maggie Alderson, who is currently writing another novel, has taken time off to pen a short story exclusively for us, and Jilly Cooper takes a look back at the etiquette of Christmas cards. Our team has tried and tested our quiz of the year, and the debate is still on about whether the winning scores were a result of secret Googling or true recall. Please do tell us how you, your family and friends do against each other. Also in this issue our travel editor Mary Novakovich has come up with some perfect suggestions for winter holidays to beat the post-festive blues. One of my favourite actresses, Juliet Stevenson, talks to Richard Barber about why she’s finally decided to get married, and Richard Wilson tells Maureen Paton about life as a sitcom anti-hero and taking on new challenges. I know this time of year can seem very commercial, so I urge you to take a look at our special feature that celebrates the work of charities. They work tirelessly to support those who need help, whether it’s people in need of support as a result of ill-health or animals that have been neglected, abused or abandoned. A donation or legacy can make a huge difference to these organisations. And finally, a very merry Christmas to you all, and here’s looking forward to 2022. Thank you for reading us, for all your letters, emails and suggestions and for all your wonderful support over the past year. Maxine Frith, Editor What’s new on lady.co.uk WIN! This was Sylvia’s promise to you... A generation ago, a woman named Sylvia made a promise. As a doctor’s secretary, she’d watched stroke destroy the lives of so many people. She was determined to make sure we could all live in a world where we’re far less likely to lose our lives to stroke. She kept her promise, and a gift to the Stroke Association was included in her Will. Sylvia’s gift helped fund the work that made sure many more of us survive stroke now than did in her lifetime. Sylvia changed the story for us all. Now it’s our turn to change the story for those who’ll come after us. Stroke still shatters lives and tears families apart. And for so many survivors the road to recovery is still long and desperately lonely. If you or someone you love has been affected by stroke – you’ll know just what that means. But it doesn’t have to be like this. You can change the story, just like Sylvia did, with a gift in your Will. All it takes is a promise. You can promise future generations a world where researchers discover new treatments and surgeries – and every single stroke survivor has the best care, rehabilitation and support network possible, to help them rebuild their lives. Will you make that promise to generations to come? Please, leave a gift in your Will to the Stroke Association. Find out how by calling 020 7566 1505 or email legacy@stroke.org.uk or visit stroke.org.uk/legacy Rebuilding lives after stroke The Stroke Association is registered as a charity in England and Wales (No 211015) and in Scotland (SC037789). Also registered in the Isle of Man (No. 945) and Jersey (NPO 369), and operating as a charity in Northern Ireland.
