Smart ISBN: Author’s Guide To Free Book Preview Technology

At the 2022 London Book Fair, digital platform Exact Editions launched a new freely-available smart ISBN self-service tool. Smart ISBNs are attractive book preview links which can be used by publishers as a free and sustainable option to increase audiences and drive book sales.

An example of a smart ISBN link to Frida Kahlo And My Left Leg by Emily Rapp Black, published by Notting Hill Editions, can be found here:

The smart ISBN self-service tool allows publishers to decide how much of the book they want to make open to readers and the destination the ‘Buy this book’ button directs users to. The Exact Editions interface is not only a simple and ad-free for a clean reading experience, but also benefits from an advanced search function that allows readers to see the breadth of the content covered in the book. As a purely digital tool, it offers a much lower carbon solution than packaging and distributing print copies.

A short video walkthrough of the service is available here:

Smart ISBN links can be used by authors as well as publishers for a range of promotional and publicity purposes, including across the authors’ own website, social media channels, blog and CV. The author’s publisher or agent can use smart ISBN links across their digital marketing channels, to promote books alongside events and book awards, and to interest publishers in translation and rights deals. Social media has become essential for building reader awareness amongst an ever-growing online community and reader groups.

Chairman of Exact Editions, Adam Hodgkin commented: “Smart ISBN links are a powerful marketing tool which can be implemented across digital channels and mediums to promote book sales and reach a worldwide audience. We have developed this free smart ISBN service as part of our drive to develop lower carbon impact solutions for book promotion.”
